Moss Control

What Is Moss?

Moss is a low-growing, non-flowering plant that thrives in damp, compacted, and low-nutrient soils. It doesn’t have true roots like grass—instead, it spreads across the surface, creating dense mats that smother turf. Unlike weeds, moss doesn’t invade aggressively—it simply fills in where grass struggles to grow. That makes it a symptom of deeper lawn issues rather than the root problem itself.

Why Do I Have Moss in My Lawn?

Moss tends to grow when the conditions are poor for grass but ideal for moss. Common causes include:

  • Poor drainage or consistently damp soil

  • Shaded areas with limited sunlight

  • Soil compaction from foot traffic or heavy equipment

  • Low nutrient levels (especially nitrogen)

  • Acidic soil with low pH

  • Thin or patchy turf due to mowing too short, drought, or neglect

Basically: where grass can't thrive, moss moves in.

How We Treat Moss

At Smart Lawn Solutions, moss control is part of a broader lawn improvement strategy. Here’s how we tackle it:

 1. Identify & Assess

We inspect your lawn to determine:

  • The extent of the moss coverage

  • What’s causing it (shade, drainage, soil issues, etc.)

  • The overall health of your turf

 2. Remove Moss

We use one or more of the following methods:

  • Moss killer (iron sulphate-based or organic alternatives) to blacken and dry out moss

  • Scarification – mechanical removal using a scarifier to rake out the dead moss

  • Aeration – reduces soil compaction and improves drainage

  • Top dressing & overseeding to restore lawn density

 3. Improve Lawn Conditions

We correct the underlying issues to prevent moss from returning:

  • Raise mowing height to promote stronger grass

  • Apply balanced fertiliser to boost grass health
